An integrative detoxification program can help you regain balance of your body.
Before we go any further, let’s just get something straight…when a naturopath talks about ‘detox’, we’re not talking about the fad, ‘quick-fix’ kinds you see promoted in gossip magazines or websites. The process of detoxification is something that takes place within our body on a regular basis; every single second in fact! But sometimes due to the stress of life, poor nutritional choices (or perhaps just the wrong choices for you), sickness, chronic illness or even just modern-day living, our natural detoxification processes can get a bit sluggish and over-worked.
When these bodily processes slow down, toxins aren’t removed from our body effectively meaning they are start roaming freely within our body, disrupting the way things are supposed to work. What we end up with is a cloudy vision of our health, unable to see what is being caused by toxin overload and what is being caused by something deeper.
What is a naturopathic detox?
Our body is a remarkable team of systems that relies on each of the players doing their job well. If one area ‘slackens off’ or stops working efficiently, it puts pressure on the other team members to take on the extra load.
When you do a detox with a naturopath, your practitioner will work with you to make sure all member of ‘your team’ are working well. They will assess the function of your:
- Digestive tract (stomach, small intestine and large intestine)
- Liver and gall bladder
- Kidneys
- Lung
- Skin
Your naturopath may suggest a combination of nutritional changes, herbal medicine and lifestyle modifications to optimise how well your team members are working.
In line with her philosophy on ‘nourishing your body’, Rebecca’s primary approach to detoxification is two-fold: put more of the good things in and get more of the bad stuff out. In some instances, herbal medicine or extra nutrients are used to kick start, strengthen or tonify the organ (or organs) that aren’t holding up their end of the bargain. In this way, harmony and balance are restored, allowing your body to do what needs to be done. Once things are working well again, many of your symptoms will also be eliminated.
What happens during a detox program?
The overall length of your detox program will vary according to your presenting concerns and how long you have had them for. Most often however, we start with a 2-4 week program. You will receive a nutritional and lifestyle program that reduces the toxic load on your body, as well as increasing nutrients and antioxidants to support detoxification. Supplements may or may not be prescribed depending on your current health status.
You may have heard horror stories of people being plagued with migraines/headaches, skin conditions, break outs, fatigue or nausea when they’ve done a ‘detox’. The reason they experienced these horrible symptoms can be for a couple of reasons:
- The detox was done too quickly for that person’s current level of health
- The detox was too harsh and lacked holistic management
- Nutritional status and adequacy was not restored prior to detoxing
- Holistic support was missing, further widening the gap in ‘team work’ between the organs of detox.
Detoxification is a specialised area and should be done under the care of a healthcare professional who can track and monitor your progress.
